Course Description

This session is the first of a Social Studies phenomenon-based approach to PD designed to give teachers of all ages from 3rd grade to High School the confidence, competencies, and resources to teach the Holocaust and combat antisemitism using the "multiple perspectives of people during different historical eras relevant to cultural groups." (SS.H.2- all levels)

The full-day session will begin with a table reading of the play Thin Edge of the Wedge performed by VPAA students followed by a Q&A with the LA based playwright Phyllis Zimbler-Miller, EHS'66.  There will also be live and recorded presentations featuring:

Digital Artifacts and Physical Artifacts with experts from the Illinois Holocaust Museum

Postal Artifacts and Counterfeit Currency from the Spungen Foundation

Liza Weimer, Author of the YA Novel "The Assignment"

Luke Berryman, Founder of The Ninth Candle

And more...

Thre will be 2 breakout sessions by assignment alike groups to collaborate around ways to incorporate these resources in the classroom

A complementary vegetarian lunch will be provided with generous support from Elgin native, Mark Siegle.
